THE HISTORY OF LEE JEANS
To say this brand has been around for a long time would be an understatement. First manufactured in Salina, Kansas way back in 1889, the jeans have remained a staple of American society ever since. It’s founding itself is quite incredible. Founder, Henry David Lee, was recommended by his doctor to head west for a better climate, as Lee was rheumatic. As a consequence, Lee moved to Kansas and started his own mercantile company, providing customers with a wide assortment of goods. However, recognizing that there were always problems keeping workwear and jeans sufficiently in stock, Lee took it upon himself to manufacture jeans and dungaree jackets at his own factory.
Over the years, Lee Jeans heavily influenced the design of the modern jean as it exists today. Lee brand jeans were among the first jean manufactures in the 1920s to incorporate the zip fly in their denim products, setting the precedent for almost all jean manufacturers to do the same. By the mid-1950s, Lee Jeans expanded its production line from simply the production of work clothes and instead began to manufacture casual wear as well. The company only expanded from this period, and by 1996, Lee Jeans founded Lee National Denim Day for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To date, the ‘holiday’ has raised over $75 million for breast cancer research and continues on today.
